Starting a Mental Health Ministry

The Sanctuary Course for Catholics

Experienced facilitators Deacon Eric and wife Melissa Gurash are available to assist in facilitating this 8-week introduction to mental health ministry that “explores the realities of mental health and illness, as well as the vital need for faith-based community conversations about these topics. The sessions are accompanied by compelling films that feature the stories of Catholics living with mental health challenges, along with the insights of archbishops, theologians, and psychologists.” Find out more at Sanctuary Mental Health Ministries.

Creating An Emmaus Spiritual Peer Support Ministry at Your Parish

The model of basic Christian communities, a foundational aspect of our Catholic faith, can be an excellent starting point for building a spiritual peer support ministry in a parish. Our Emmaus Support group meeting model provides a simple, peer-focused outline to empower the formation of these kinds of support groups. Because these types of groups are lead by peers, for peers with lived experiences, there is a reduced need for advanced mental health training and certification.

Mental Health Retreats

The Healing Word Mental Health Retreat

This retreat combines personal stories and biblical reflections, using a simplified Lectio Divina to explore the healing power of prayer in the context of mental health challenges. Through bold engagement with Psalms of Lament and small group sharing, it offers an impactful journey toward healing, understanding, and vital spiritual and communal support.

Mental Health Talks

Mental Health and the Spiritual Life

By sharing personal experiences with mental illness, this presentation explores how the Catholic faith serves as a guide in navigating mental health challenges. It highlights explicit support through prayer, scripture, and spiritual guidance, as well as the implicit assistance derived from the unique worldview inherent in our Catholic faith. The talk further offers evidence-based tools to seamlessly integrate Catholic spiritual practices into the lives of those with mental health challenges, enhancing resilience and fostering hope and healing.
