Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an internationally recognized training program that gives participants the tools and confidence to support someone experiencing a mental health problem or crisis—just as physical first aid prepares us to respond to medical emergencies. Certified by the Mental Health Commission of Canada, our Emmaus Support team is pleased to offer this vital training to Catholic parishes, ministries, and organizations across the country.
MHFA does not teach people to diagnose or treat mental illness. Instead, it equips participants to recognize the signs of common mental health struggles, respond appropriately, and guide individuals toward professional help and community support. This practical knowledge is especially important in faith communities, where clergy, staff, and volunteers are often the first point of contact for someone in distress.
In the spirit of Christ’s healing ministry and the Church’s call to accompaniment, MHFA training fits seamlessly within a broader pastoral approach to mental health. It fosters awareness, reduces stigma, and helps create safer, more compassionate environments where all can feel seen, heard, and valued. Whether welcoming a newcomer, responding to a crisis, or simply journeying with someone through a difficult time, having the right tools and understanding can make all the difference.
We invite you to contact us to learn more or to book a one- or two-day MHFA training course, available both in person and virtually, for your parish team, diocesan office staff, hospitality volunteers, or other key ministry leaders. Together, we can build a Church that not only prays for healing, but practices it in tangible, life-giving ways.
